I love a powerful story. As a child, I remember quaking around the campfire while friends shared harrowing ghost stories. Even then, I was most drawn to stories with deeper truths — how a ghost’s cruelty stemmed from loneliness or a desire for revenge. These stories stayed with me, long after the telling.
Today, I am thrilled to offer coaching services to help the new writer share their story. I offer three different services, all detailed below. Whether you are just starting out, or have completed the first draft of your manuscript, I am here to help. Please reach out if I can be of service.
OPTION 1
3-Month Memoir Coach
As a National Geographic author and memoirist, I know how daunting it can be to put our lives on the page for strangers to study, blemishes and all. The temptation to give up its enormous, especially when writing out scenes from the difficult parts of our lives. If it weren’t for the tough and talented guides I had along the way, I’m not sure Life from Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family, and Forgiveness would have made it to bookstores around the world. Don’t let fear or lack of know-how hold you back from accomplishing your dreams. Let me put what I learned on my writing journey to use for you – as your accountability partner and guide.
When drafting my memoir, three things kept me from failing:
Clear Goals
Accountability
Motivation
As your Memoir Coach, I offer these same three gifts, so that you can begin your writing journey with success. Over three monthly sessions, I will be there to 1) Discuss and establish your goals 2) Name guidelines for accountability 3) Provide constructive feedback on your narrative to motivate and help you gain momentum.
Month One:
One-hour meeting to discuss and establish your goals.
Month Two:
First Partial manuscript reading (up to 15,000 words)
One-hour follow-up meeting to discuss feedback.
Month Three:
Second partial manuscript reading (up to 15,000 words)
Final follow-up meeting, with new goals established for moving forward on your own.
Students must provide digital and hard copies of their manuscript.

OPTION 2
Memoir Review
Getting feedback from an experienced memoirist can help you go from first draft to final draft. But the messy process in the middle is where the magic happens. Unnecessary scenes get cut and new scenes added – all to help your book become its best.
I will use my experience as a National Geographic author and memoirist to carefully read your entire manuscript. Then I will give you feedback – both written and in a private 2-hour coaching session. Feedback might include ways to tighten your memoir’s structure, establishing through lines for characters, and eliminating the narrative’s sagging middle. Please note: I do not proofread or line edit manuscripts.
